How do I put this into words suitable for a 12 year olds homework assignment?
The prevailing winds from the west bring moist air off the ocean, which drops rain as it is forced over the mountains(the air mass cools as it rises and can't contain as much moisture as it had near sea level). This creates a rain shadow on the eastern side as the air mass, now containing much less moisture, descends back down toward the ocean.
The question for the assignment was: Why is the yearly rainfall in western regions of New Zealand generally greater than in th eastern regions?
By the way i am the 12 year old!!!!
I assume you found this answer somewhere and want to rewrite it in your own 12 year old words. Hmmmm how about....
The winds from the west absorb moisture from the ocean. The air cools as it rises into the mountains and can't hold the moisture so it rains. Most of the moisture has fallen by the time it crosses the mountains so the east gets less rain.
